Post: Heightened Security Measures Announced for Palarong Pambansa in Cebu City

CEBU CITY — The Philippine National Police (PNP) in Central Visayas announced on Wednesday that it will deploy 2,000 police officers to ensure the safety of participants and spectators at the upcoming Palarong Pambansa. The national games are scheduled to run from July 6 to 17 in Cebu City.

According to Philippines News Agency, spokesperson of the Police Regional Office (PRO-7), the deployment of officers is subject to adjustments based on the final count of billeting areas and sports venues. The PNP is coordinating closely with the Department of Education and the local government units (LGUs) of Cebu City and other involved LGUs to finalize security arrangements. “We are adjusting our plans as we receive updates about additional venues being included by the organizers,” Pelare noted.

Currently, there are 25 billeting quarters in Metro Cebu designated to house approximately 15,000 athletes, coaches, trainers, and school officials. Pelare also highlighted the necessity of securing other major events happening concurrently in the province, which may also require police attention.

Despite no significant threats detected by the intelligence community, the police are not overlooking the possibility of petty crimes such as snatching and thievery, along with other security concerns like traffic congestion. Acting Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia stated that the city government is fully supporting the PNP’s efforts by providing eight new patrol cars to PNP-Cebu City during last week’s Independence Day celebration.

This year marks the city’s hosting of the national games, emphasizing the collaborative efforts of local authorities to ensure a smooth and secure Palarong Pambansa.
