Guiuan Launches Greenhouse Project with Chinese Aid Ahead of Typhoon Yolanda Decennial
Guiuan – The coastal municipality of Guiuan, located in Eastern Samar, marked a significant step forward in bolstering food security with the inauguration of a new greenhouse project on Monday, funded by the Chinese government.
According to Philippines News Agency, who presided over the launch ceremony alongside Zheng Junlyu from the Chinese Embassy in Manila, the initiative arrives as the region approaches the tenth anniversary of Super Typhoon Yolanda on November 8. Kwan emphasized the project’s potential to provide sustainable agricultural solutions, especially following the devastation Yolanda wrought on the local agriculture sector.
The PHP2 million facility, situated within the Eco-waste and Management Center of Guiuan, is designed to cultivate a variety of vegetables such as cabbage, lettuce, okra, and eggplant. This variety aims to enrich the diets of Guiuan’s residents and bolster the community’s economic resilience. The mayor highlighted the shift from traditional farming methods to modernized agriculture that the greenhouse represents, which could lead to enhanced farming techniques and knowledge for local farmers.
Further gratitude was expressed towards 4Ps Partylist Rep. Marcelino Libanan, who facilitated the connection between the local government and the Chinese Embassy for funding the project. The greenhouse is equipped with advanced features like a fertigation system, automated drip, and micro sprinkler irrigation across a 42-square-meter area, as well as a solar greenhouse structure unit complete with a hydroponic system.
Representative Zheng Junlyu spoke on the significance of the donation, pointing out its role in fortifying food security and demonstrating China’s commitment to technological assistance and cooperation.
The establishment of this project represents a hopeful leap in recovery and progress for Guiuan as it commemorates the ten-year milestone since one of the most devastating natural calamities hit the region.
