Filipino Health Experts Highlight Risks of Shingles in Awareness Campaign

MANILA – Filipino medical professionals are intensifying efforts to educate the public about shingles, a potentially severe viral infection, emphasizing the need for proper diagnosis and treatment, particularly in older adults.

According to Philippines News Agency, who spoke at a campaign launch addressing shingles awareness, many individuals mistake the initial symptoms of the disease—such as skin sensitivity, tingling, or itching—for simple allergic reactions. Shingles, scientifically known as Herpes Zoster, stems from the varicella-zoster virus, which also causes chickenpox. Symptoms progress from rashes or red spots to painful blisters.

Infectious disease specialist Dr. Rontgene Solante underscored the gravity of shingles, pointing out its potential for severe complications and high morbidity rates. A notable characteristic of the condition is a rash that appears on one side of the body, accompanied by significant pain that can hinder daily activities and significantly diminish life quality.

Research indicates that approximately 30% of shingles patients endure chronic nerve pain post-infection, and around 25% may suffer from complications affecting the eyes, occasionally resulting in vision loss. Solante highlighted the risk for individuals previously infected with chickenpox, as the virus remains dormant in nerve tissues and can reactivate later in life.

The emphasis was on the urgency for those exhibiting symptoms to seek medical advice promptly and adhere to prescribed treatments to mitigate potential psychological impacts, such as anxiety or depression, linked to the ailment’s discomfort.

Global biopharmaceutical firm Glaxo Smith Kline (GSK) is spearheading the nationwide campaign to bolster understanding of shingles, spotlighting the disease’s implications, available treatments, and preventive measures. The initiative also advocates for professional healthcare consultation over self-medication in managing the condition, aiming to enhance overall patient outcomes and awareness.
