KARAWACI-TANGERANG, INDONESIA — Filipino FIDE Master Christian Gian Karlo Arca advanced to co-lead in the Open division of the Eastern Asia Juniors and Girls Chess Championships, following a pivotal win against International Master Ganzorig Amartuvshin on Monday night. Arca's victory positions him among the top contenders as the tournament progresses.
According to the tournament's latest standings, the 15-year-old from Panabo, Davao del Norte, has amassed 5.0 points, sharing the lead with Mongolian IM Munkhdalai Amilal and Indonesian FM Nayaka Budhidharma. Having clinched the rapid title on July 5, Arca is set to face Amilal in the upcoming round, with a focus on securing his third norm required for the International Master title—a milestone he nearly reached after earning his second norm at a Grandmaster tournament in Vietnam last May.
In the girls' division, 17-year-old Franchesca Largo from the Philippines defeated Indonesia's Shafira Devi Herfesa to hold third place, tied with Mongolian FM Nanjid Tsogzolmaa at 4.5 points. Indonesian WIM Laysa Latifah leads the girls' leaderboard with 5.5 points, followed by WFM Cecilia Natalie Liuviann at 5.0 points.
The competition remains fierce, with several players including Indonesians Ivana Maria Treopolsa, WCM Theodora Paulina Walukow, WFM Samantha Edithso, and Singaporean Durga Saravanan, all knotted at 4.0 points and vying for positions.
The participation of Arca and Largo is officially supported by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines and the Philippine Sports Commission, highlighting the significant investment in nurturing young talent in the sport.
