DPWH Integrates Plastic Waste into Road Projects for Enhanced Sustainability
MANILA – The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has received commendation for its innovative use of shredded plastic waste in road construction, a move aimed at improving the durability of national road infrastructure.
According to Philippines News Agency, Senator Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr. praised the DPWH on Tuesday for its commitment to sustainable practices, particularly for its implementation of a new policy that incorporates recycled plastic into asphalt. “I have long suggested to DPWH to make their projects sustainable and resilient, and they did not disappoint with this new policy,” Revilla stated in a news release.
According to Department Order 139 s. 2024, the DPWH has authorized the use of low-density polyethylene plastic bag waste in hot mix asphalt. This initiative sets a new standard for the Bituminous Concrete Surface Course, now enhanced with this recycled material. Public Works Secretary Manuel Bonoan has directed all regional, district engineering offices, and Unified Project Management Office clusters to adhere to the new policy, underscoring its dual benefits of promoting recycling and improving the asphalt’s resistance to deformation.
Revilla expressed satisfaction with the policy’s dual benefits, noting, “This will not only make projects sustainable but is also a big help to waste management.”
