Post: DOST to Establish Six Innovation Hubs in Ilocos Region for Community Development

ILOCOS REGION — The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) announced plans to establish six innovation hubs in the Ilocos Region. These hubs are part of a broader initiative to launch 80 such centers across the Philippines, aimed at addressing local challenges through technological innovations.

According to Philippines News Agency, the hubs will be located in Batac and Laoag in Ilocos Norte, Candon in Ilocos Sur, San Fernando in La Union, Alaminos in Pangasinan, and the provincial government of Ilocos Norte. These locations were selected based on the local governments’ commitment to fostering technologically innovative communities. DOST's Smart and Sustainable Communities Program, which is set to launch these hubs, targets regions with potential for significant technological advancement.

DOST Undersecretary for Regional Operations, Engineer Sancho Mabborang, emphasized during a media conference that the initiative seeks partners with unique ideas to contribute to the advancement of science and technology. The innovation hubs are part of a larger effort to expand the research and development network in the Philippines, supporting the national government's vision of a "New Philippines" focused on economic and social transformation.

The program will also include full digitalization of transaction processes and the introduction of new technologies in agriculture and disaster risk management in the selected areas. The initiative is supported by various government agencies, including the Development Academy of the Philippines, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), and the Department of the Interior and Local Government. These collaborations aim to integrate various technologies and innovations to improve community welfare and bring about positive change.

DOST Secretary Renato Solidum, who attended the event, stated that the hubs would play a crucial role in promoting human well-being, wealth creation, and sustainability across the Philippines.
