Post: DOLE Sets Double Pay for Araw ng Kagitingan and Eid’l al-Fitr Holidays

MANILA — The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has announced enhanced pay rules for workers in the private sector who will be on duty during the upcoming Araw ng Kagitingan (Day of Valor) on April 9 and Eid'l al-Fitr (the end of Ramadan) on April 10, mandating a 200 percent salary rate for those dates.

According to Philippines News Agency, released on Friday, employees are to receive double their daily wages for the first eight hours of work on these twin regular holidays.

The advisory details that for overtime work exceeding eight hours, employees will be entitled to an additional 30 percent of their hourly rate. Specifically, the overtime pay formula is described as the hourly rate of the basic wage times 200 percent, then multiplied by 130 percent and the number of hours worked. Workers who perform duties on a holiday that coincides with their rest day will receive an extra 30 percent on top of the 200 percent wage (basic wage times 200 percent x 130 percent).

For overtime work on a holiday that also falls on an employee's rest day, the pay calculation follows the hourly rate of the basic wage times 200 percent, further multiplied by 130 percent and the total hours worked. Employees who do not work on these holidays are still eligible for 100 percent of their wage for that day, provided they worked or were on paid leave the day before the holiday. This condition also applies when the day preceding the holiday is a non-working day or the employee's rest day, with entitlement to holiday pay if the employee worked or was on paid leave on the last working day before the non-working day or rest day.

Araw ng Kagitingan commemorates the valor of Filipino and American soldiers during the Battle of Bataan against Japanese forces in 1942, while Eid'l al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, a significant period of fasting observed by Muslims worldwide. The DOLE's directive aims to ensure fair compensation for workers during these important national and religious observances.
