DILG Allocates P3.4 Billion to Enhance Infrastructure in 762 Bicol Villages

BICOL — The Department of the Interior and Local Government in Bicol (DILG-5) reported on Tuesday that 762 geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDA) in the region have seen significant infrastructure development, thanks to the P3.4 billion fund from the Support to Barangay Development Program (SBDP) under the Marcos administration.

According to Philippines News Agency, who spoke at the “Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas” media briefing, the program has implemented 934 projects since 2022. These projects include the construction of farm-to-market roads, water and sanitation systems, barangay health stations, rural electrification, and school buildings. “Our efforts range from monitoring and evaluating our local government units (LGUs) to providing continuous capacity interventions and technical assistance to our local officials. We are committed to ending armed conflict and insurgency, and fostering comprehensive development for peace,” said Escober.

The SBDP targeted GIDAs after conducting consultations and dialogues with officials and residents in areas previously affected by conflicts. In 2022, the program allocated P1.12 billion to 280 GIDA barangays, resulting in 343 projects that included significant road construction and improvements in public utilities and services. In 2023, the program expanded to include 261 GIDA barangays with 365 projects, backed by an allocation of P1.7 billion.

Looking forward, Escober revealed plans for 2024, noting that 221 GIDA villages have been inspected, with P552.5 million allocated for 226 new projects. “The funds have already been transferred to LGUs, and construction can start anytime this year. About 226 barangays will benefit from the SBDP in 2024,” he stated.

With the ongoing success of the SBDP, plans for 2025 are already underway, with 39 projects in Bicol focusing on enhancing water and sanitation services, constructing additional farm-to-market roads, expanding rural electrification, and improving health and educational facilities. The total budget for these priority projects in 2025 is estimated at P200 million.
