Deadly Attack at Mogadishu Beach: 32 Killed in Suicide Bombing and Gunfire
MOGADISHU — A devastating suicide bombing followed by a gun attack at a popular beach in Mogadishu claimed the lives of 32 individuals and injured 63 others on Friday evening, according to local authorities.
According to Philippines News Agency, a spokesman for the Somali police, the assault commenced with a suicide bomber who detonated explosives among crowds gathered for relaxation at the beach. The attack did not end there; gunmen stormed the Beach View Hotel, leading to a violent confrontation with security forces. “Three terrorists were neutralized inside the hotel during the firefight,” Hassan reported at a news conference. He further detailed that among the casualties were security personnel, including one who died from injuries sustained during the response.
The area, known for being frequented by civilians, security officials, and businesspeople, was plunged into chaos as emergency services rushed to manage the aftermath. Hospitals in Mogadishu reported dozens of severe injuries from the incident. Al-Shabaab, a terrorist group affiliated with Al-Qaeda, has claimed responsibility for the bloodshed.
This event underscores the ongoing security challenges in Somalia, where groups such as al-Shabaab and Daesh/ISIS have mounted numerous attacks. The recent violence follows the Somali government’s intensified efforts to combat terrorism, as declared by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.
