Post: Davao City Hosts National Cacao Congress 2023, Showcasing Innovations and Partnerships

Davao City, the National Cacao Congress 2023 concluded its two-day event, highlighting new technologies and approaches in the cacao industry. This event, taking place on November 16-17, focused on addressing challenges within the industry and fostering collaboration between government entities, non-government organizations, and the private sector.

According to Philippines News Agency, chairperson of the Davao Regional Cacao Industry Council, the congress discussed critical issues such as enhancing farm productivity, maintaining product quality, technology transfer, marketing, and branding. The congress also featured insights from global partners, including representatives from the International Cocoa Organization and PUM Netherlands, who shared their experiences and strategies for industry growth.

Muyco highlighted the Philippines' achievements in the cacao sector, noting the country's consistent recognition in the Cacao of Excellence awards since 2017 and its success in various international competitions. He pointed out the rising global market prices and increasing demand in the Asian region as significant opportunities for the industry.

Presidential Assistant for Eastern Mindanao, Leo Tereso Magno, representing President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., emphasized the administration's commitment to supporting the cacao industry through collaborative efforts. Senator Mark Villar, the event's guest of honor, also expressed his support for the industry's growth and recognition of Filipino cacao growers for their quality products.

The congress also acknowledged Jose Saguban, a local cacao farmer, for his achievement in being selected as one of the top 50 best cocoa bean producers at the 2019 International Cocoa Awards. The event underscored the Philippines' potential in cacao production, with the Davao region accounting for 81 percent of the country's annual cacao output. Despite the local consumption of 50,000 metric tons of cocoa products annually, the Philippines produces only between 10,000-15,000 metric tons, indicating significant growth potential in this sector.
