Post: Court Revenue Sees Decline Amid Mixed Trends in Case Filings

Muara: The number of civil and criminal cases filed in various courts showed a mixed trend in 2025. While the Court of Appeal, Intermediate Court, and Magistrates' Court experienced a decline, the High Court recorded an increase in cases.

According to Radio Television Brunei, statistics from the High Court or the Supreme Court revealed that 16 civil cases were recorded in the Court of Appeal last year, compared to 20 cases in 2024. Additionally, 10 criminal cases were brought before the Court of Appeal in 2025, down from 14 cases in 2024. The High Court saw an increase in civil cases filed, rising from 56 cases in 2024 to 69 cases in 2025, while criminal cases slightly increased from 12 in 2024 to 13 in 2025.

In terms of appeals, 5 civil appeal cases were filed from the Magistrate's Court to the High Court in 2025, up from 2 cases the previous year. Meanwhile, 28 criminal appeal cases were recorded last year from the Magistrate's Court to the High Court, a slight decrease from 29 cases in 2024. Civil case filings in the Intermediate Court decreased from 60 cases in 2024 to 49 cases last year. However, criminal cases in 2025 rose to 54 cases compared to 49 cases the previous year. Commercial cases also saw a decrease, with 79 cases recorded last year compared to 83 in 2024.

In the Magistrate's Court, 475 civil cases were filed in 2025, a decrease from 501 cases in 2024. Conversely, criminal cases surged to 679 cases last year from 481 in 2024. Notices of bankruptcy and insolvency declined from 350 in 2024 to 289 in 2025. Additionally, 293 Receiving Orders were made, alongside 3 Adjudication Orders filed last year.

Meanwhile, the total court revenue in 2025 was nearly two million dollars, a decline from more than two million two hundred thousand dollars in 2024.
