Bandar seri begawan: The Consumer Price Index (CPI) for April 2026 recorded a modest increase of 0.1% compared to April 2025, primarily fueled by a rise of 0.8% in the Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages index. In contrast, the Non-Food index saw a decrease of 0.1%.
According to Radio Television Brunei, the uptick in the Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages index was largely attributed to higher prices in categories such as Meat, Fish and Seafood, and Coffee, Tea and Cocoa. This increase counterbalanced the overall decline observed in the Non-Food index.
The Non-Food index's drop was mainly influenced by reduced prices in Communication, Recreation and Culture, and Miscellaneous Goods and Services categories. This decrease highlights the varied dynamics within different sectors of consumer spending.
On a month-on-month basis, the CPI for April 2026 rose by 0.5% compared to March 2026, largely due to an increase in the Non-Food index. Meanwhile, the Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages index experienced a slight decline of 0.1%. The rise in the Non-Food index was driven by higher prices in Clothing and Footwear, Transport, and Recreation and Culture, while the decrease in the Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages index was primarily caused by lower prices for Vegetables, Fish and Seafood, and Oil and Fats.
