China Hosts Naval Symposium in Qingdao Amid South China Sea Tensions

QINGDAO - The Chinese navy launched its 19th biennial Western Pacific Naval Symposium on Sunday, gathering naval representatives from across the globe in Qingdao, as reported by state media. The event, which coincides with the 75th anniversary of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy, comes at a time of increasing regional tensions in the South China Sea.

According to Philippines News Agency, the U.S. Pacific Fleet Commander, Admiral Stephen Koehler, heads the American delegation at the meeting. This visit marks a significant interaction amidst growing diplomatic strains over maritime claims involving several countries in the South China Sea. Over 180 officials from 29 different nations are attending the four-day symposium, themed "Seas of Shared Future."

PLA Navy spokesperson Qu Tao emphasized China’s longstanding commitment to inclusivity, equality, and cooperation within the naval forum, principles that have guided its participation since the symposium’s inception. Qu highlighted the Chinese navy's readiness to collaborate internationally on marine governance and to address maritime safety challenges collectively.

This year's symposium in Qingdao marks the first time China has hosted the event since 2014, reflecting its proactive stance in regional maritime diplomacy.
