Post: Chess Grandmaster Eugene Torre to Open Lipa Rapid Chess Tournament

LIPA, BATANGAS — Asia's first Grandmaster, Eugene Torre, is set to grace the opening of the JCI Senate Lipa Open rapid chess tournament at the Lipa Convention Center on Monday. The event, which coincides with the city's 419th foundation anniversary, will feature competitive play across team and youth divisions.

According to Philippines News Agency, the tournament aims to foster the development of chess skills and confidence among participants, particularly young players. The event boasts a significant cash prize pool of PHP222,000 and has attracted notable chess figures such as Grandmasters Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. and Darwin Laylo, as well as a range of International Masters and National Masters.

Participants in the youth division include promising young talents such as 10-year-olds Henrick Marello Bolaños, Raydhien Miguel Bautista, and Kiara Burgos, along with 13-year-old King Alexander Oseña. Reyes emphasized the importance of the event as a platform for young athletes to gain inspiration and encouragement from established players like Torre.

Eugene Torre, who became the first Grandmaster from Asia in 1974 and a veteran of 23 Philippine Olympiad teams, brings a wealth of experience and prestige to the event. His presence is expected to highlight the tournament's significance and inspire both new and seasoned players.

The tournament is organized by the JCI Senate Lipa in collaboration with local dignitaries, including Mayor Eric Africa and other community leaders, highlighting the city's commitment to promoting chess as a key cultural and educational activity.
