Cebu Transport Cooperatives Appeal to President Marcos to Continue Modernization Program
CEBU – The Federation of Cebu Transport Cooperatives (FCTC) has formally requested President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to proceed with the Public Transport Modernization Program (PTMP), countering Senate efforts to suspend it.
According to Philippines News Agency, chairperson of the FCTC, the federation submitted a letter to President Marcos on August 1, expressing strong opposition to Senate Resolution No. 1096, which calls for the suspension and review of the PTMP. The FCTC argues that the modernization program, aimed at replacing old and unsafe jeepneys with newer, environmentally friendly vehicles, is crucial for the region’s economic and environmental health.
The letter, endorsed by 22 registered cooperatives and transport corporations in Cebu, highlighted that suspending the PTMP would negatively impact local manufacturers and suppliers of modern jeepney units by reducing demand, potentially leading to job losses and decreased economic activity. The federation also expressed concern about the adverse effects on jeepney operators who have already invested in meeting the program’s requirements.
The FCTC warned that halting the PTMP could deter future investments in the public transportation sector and slow down progress toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving air quality. The push to suspend the program, they argued, would delay the shift to cleaner, more fuel-efficient vehicles, exacerbating environmental problems and contributing to climate change.
This appeal comes in the wake of a collective action by 22 senators who, on Wednesday, advocated for a temporary halt of the PTMP due to concerns over its hasty and uncoordinated implementation. They emphasized the need for a thorough reassessment to address the apprehensions of drivers and transport operators who feel burdened by the program.
