BuCor Celebrates Nelson Mandela Day by Releasing 784 Inmates in July
MANILA — The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) has released 784 persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) as part of its commemoration of Nelson Mandela International Day, bringing the total number of inmates released under the current administration to 15,143.
According to Philippines News Agency, which occurred between June 11 and July 18, included individuals whose sentences had expired, those who were acquitted, and others who received parole, probation, or executive clemency. This initiative is part of BuCor’s ongoing efforts to manage prison populations and honor the legacy of Nelson Mandela, reflecting the “Mandela Rules” which emphasize treating all detainees with dignity.
The event also featured remarks from South African Ambassador to the Philippines, Bartinah Tombizodwa Radebe-Netshitenzhe, who shared her experiences as a former prisoner and activist in South Africa. She stressed the importance of rehabilitation and the need for ex-inmates to avoid returning to prison, urging them to maintain a positive mindset for successful reintegration into society.
