Brunei’s Sultan Celebrates 78th Birthday with Royal Cycling Event

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN — His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei Darussalam participated in a special cycling event on Saturday, marking his 78th birthday, which coursed through the capital, Bandar Seri Begawan. The Royal Birthday Cycling Recreation 2024 event was both initiated and concluded at Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien, incorporating family participation and a community sports celebration.

According to Radio Television Brunei, His Majesty was joined by his sons, His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office; His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Malik; and His Royal Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah, along with his brother. Upon arrival, His Majesty was welcomed by Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Nazmi bin Haji Mohamad, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, and Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ahmaddin bin Haji Abdul Rahman, the Minister of Home Affairs.

His Majesty led an 8-kilometer cycling route that traversed main roads such as Jalan Pretty, Jalan Elizabeth 2, Jalan Stoney, and Jalan Kumbang Pasang, ending back at the starting point. The event also featured a 78-kilometer cycling component, in which 78 cyclists participated to honor each year of His Majesty’s life.

In addition to the cycling activities, His Majesty took part in awarding prizes for a Tug of War tournament held as part of the festivities. The event underscored the Sultan’s commitment to sports and physical fitness as part of cultural and national celebrations.
