Brunei Darussalam Joins Inter-Parliamentary Union as 183rd Member

Geneva: The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Governing Council has approved the Legislative Council of Brunei Darussalam’s participation as the IPU’s 183rd member. This decision, reached through an approved resolution, marks a significant moment for Brunei Darussalam, signifying its official membership in the world’s oldest and largest inter-parliamentary organization. The membership was formalized at the 151st Assembly of the IPU held recently in Geneva, Switzerland.

According to Radio Television Brunei, during the acceptance speech, Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Lela Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdul Rahman bin Dato Setia Haji Mohamed Taib, Speaker of the Legislative Council, highlighted the historic nature of this achievement in fulfilling the long-term goal of joining the global inter-parliamentary community. Yang Berhormat emphasized the necessity of diplomacy and inter-parliamentary cooperation to address global challenges and reaffirmed the Legislative Council’s commitment to contributing constructively to the IPU’s objectives of fostering peace, good governance, and sustainable development on an international scale.

The Brunei delegation included Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman and Yang Berhormat Awang Zainol bin Haji Mohamed, Members of the Legislative Council, as well as Her Excellency Dayangku Mazlizah binti Pengiran Haji Mahalee, the permanent representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland.
