Post: Brunei Court Imposes Fines for Customs Violations

Bandar Seri Begawan — Today, the Magistrate's Court sentenced two individuals for separate offenses under the Excise Order 2006, reinforcing the country's strict regulations against unauthorized sale and possession of contraband.

According to Radio Television Brunei, 66-year-old permanent resident Leong Fuk was convicted for possession of illicit cigarettes and a small amount of cash from illegal sales. Fuk was fined five thousand dollars, facing five months' imprisonment in lieu of payment. Concurrently, Saiful Efendi, 45, received a 24 thousand dollar fine or an 18-month prison term for possessing undeclared cigarettes and alcohol. The contraband items were confiscated for destruction, and proceeds from the sales were seized by the government.
