Borongan City to Boost Tourism and Economy with New PHP219-Million Coastal Road Project
BORONGAN CITY — The ongoing construction of the PHP219-million Borongan City Diversion Coastal Road is set to enhance tourism and stimulate economic growth in Eastern Samar’s capital, officials announced on Monday.
According to Philippines News Agency, the new road will connect Sabang North and Sabang South villages, offering a vital additional route for travelers heading to the northern and eastern parts of the province. This project includes an 825-meter road with a 150-meter bridge that extends from Baybay Boulevard to the national highway at Sabang North. Mayor Agda emphasized that this infrastructure development is not just about improving traffic congestion in the downtown area but is also pivotal for promoting local tourism and economic activities.
The coastal road is expected to increase accessibility to Baybay Boulevard, a prime tourist destination in Borongan City. The boulevard, known for hosting the national surfing championship under the United Philippine Surfing Association, includes attractions such as Baybay Beach, sports facilities, and a range of dining and lodging options. The project aims to draw more visitors to these amenities, boosting the city’s economic and sports tourism prospects.
Funding for the coastal road was facilitated by House Minority Floor Leader and 4Ps Party-list Rep. Marcelino Libanan, with PHP163.9 million already released for 2024. Rep. Libanan has assured that the necessary funds will be secured to complete the project by 2025, covering all planned components including bridge construction, slope protection, and drainage systems.
This development is seen as a significant milestone for Borongan City, promising not only to ease urban traffic but also to enhance the overall development of the area, making it a more attractive destination for both tourists and residents alike.
