Makati, Philippines - Berong Nickel Corporation (BNC) is set to invest an additional PHP50 million in the rehabilitation of its nickel mine in Quezon, Palawan, aiming to surpass its targets for the year.
According to Philippines News Agency, BNC President Tulsi Das Reyes, in an interview, confirmed that the company is ahead of schedule in its rehabilitation efforts. The company has already rehabilitated 30 hectares of the Berong mine, equivalent to 88 percent of its 34-hectare target for 2023. Initially, BNC allocated PHP110 million for the six-year rehabilitation period but plans to increase the budget due to rising fuel costs. The Berong mine, operational since October 2006 and depleted by December 2021, covers 109 hectares of surface mine, 209 hectares of silt control structures, and 25 hectares of stockpile area. Reyes mentioned that the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) intends to showcase the mine's rehabilitation as a model project. Emphasizing the importance of perfection in the rehabilitation process, Reyes said there's no incentive to finish early, and the focus is on achieving the best possible results.
