Post: Baguio Students Advocate for Weekly ‘Earth Day’ Initiatives

BAGUIO CITY — A student-driven initiative at Saint Louis University is proposing the observance of 'Earth Day' every Monday on campus. This campaign aims to incorporate various environmentally conscious practices into the campus routine. Aileen Refuerzo, the city chief information officer, reported Wednesday that the initiative was presented during an event focused on raising environmental awareness among college students.

According to Philippines News Agency, the proposal by SLU students includes several eco-friendly activities such as turning off non-essential lights and electronic devices during designated hours, encouraging breaks from technology, and the establishment of bicycle parking areas to support non-motorized transportation. Additional measures comprise the use of compost bins for waste management, promoting donations of used educational materials, and advocating for personal reusable items to minimize waste.

The initiative extends beyond the university, with suggestions for household environmental practices like waste segregation, home gardening, rainwater harvesting, and the use of sustainable packaging materials. The students also propose a broad range of innovative research ideas focused on sustainability, ranging from converting waste materials into useful products to the development of biotechnological solutions for environmental challenges.

The student body plans to mobilize a petition to extend these zero-waste practices to the wider community. The SLU proposal culminated a series of lectures across five academic institutions, aimed at fostering student-led environmental strategies for potential adoption in broader civic and academic settings.
