46th AIPA General Assembly Concludes with Record Number of Resolutions Adopted
Kuala lumpur: The 46th General Assembly of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) concluded in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, marking a notable achievement with the adoption of 42 resolutions across six Standing Committees. The gathering, held at the World Trade Centre, was led by Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Lela Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdul Rahman bin Dato Setia Haji Mohamed Taib of Brunei Darussalam, along with twelve Members of the Legislative Council. The resolutions emphasize AIPA’s commitment to addressing regional challenges, enhancing resilience, and promoting connectivity for the ASEAN community. This milestone assembly, themed ‘Parliament at the Forefront for Inclusive Growth and Sustainable ASEAN,’ set a new record for the number of resolutions adopted.
According to Radio Television Brunei, the Political Committee addressed key issues such as peace initiatives, cybercrime cooperation, human rights, climate change effects, and the humanitarian situation. Brunei’s Legislative Council was represented by Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman and Yang Berhormat Dayang Hajah Rosmawatty binti Haji Abdul Mumin. The Economic Committee discussed the AEC Blueprint 2025, economic development initiatives, and digital transformation, with representation from Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Setia Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abd. Rahman bin Haji Ibrahim and others.
The Social Committee focused on social protection concerning climate change, healthcare, and drug issues, represented by Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Johan Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Adanan bin Begawan Pehin Siraja Khatib Dato Seri Setia Haji Md. Yusof and colleagues. In the Women Parliamentarians of AIPA (WAIPA) session, resolutions were endorsed to enhance women’s political participation and digital skills. Representing Brunei were Yang Berhormat Dayang Hajah Safiah binti Sheikh Haji Abdul Salam and Yang Berhormat Dayang Chong Chin Yee.
The Young Parliamentarians of AIPA (YPA) emphasized youth roles in politics and economic development, highlighting the first YPA-AIPA working visit. The Organisation Committee approved resolutions regarding AIPA administration and the appointment of a new Secretary General. Legislative Council representation included Yang Berhormat Pengiran Haji Isa bin Pengiran Haji Aliuddin, among others.
The assembly also hosted a dialogue with 14 AIPA Observer Parliaments under the theme ‘ASEAN Centrality: Catalysing an Inclusive Regional Architecture for a Sustainable Future,’ focusing on economic cooperation and sustainable trade. The assembly concluded with a Second Plenary Session, presenting reports and signing a Joint Statement. The Closing Ceremony featured the handover of the AIPA Chairmanship from Malaysia to the Philippines for the next assembly. The participation of Brunei’s Legislative Council underscores the country’s support and efforts in enhancing regional parliamentary relations within ASEAN.
