UBD Ranked Top 250 in Times Higher Education World Rankings

Universiti Brunei Darussalam, UBD, achieved another major milestone when it became the first university in Brunei Darussalam to be ranked at the 201-250 band in the Times Higher Education, THE World Rankings.

This makes UBD the 4th engineering school in ASEAN to obtain the ranking, in addition to the National University of Singapore; Nanyang Technological University in Singapore; and the University of Malaya in Malaysia. The THE World University Ranking is one of the most influential university rankings in the world. It is the second subject ranking for UBD in which Physical Sciences entered the ranking for the first time last year. According to Doctor Juliana binti Haji Zaini, Dean of the Faculty of Integrated Technology, FIT, UBD, the position among the best engineering schools in the region will increase confidence among current and future students in the quality and credibility of the university's engineering programmes.

80th ASEAN COSTI Meeting

Several key issues were discussed during the 80th ASEAN Committee on Science, Technology and Innovation, ASEAN COSTI Meeting, including the Status of the Science, Technology and Innovation Fund, initiatives for the ASEAN Science, Technology and Innovation Action Plan, implementation of COSTI 2021 annual priorities including the annual priority agreement COSTI 2022. The meeting also discussed the support of Science, Technology and Innovation Industry, STI education framework, 4.0 and the agreement on the 81st COSTI Meeting to be hosted and chaired by Viet Nam.

The virtual meeting held on the 12th to 13th of October 2021 was joined by Mohammad Nazri bin Haji Mohammad Yusof, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications. The meeting was chaired by His Excellency Professor Sirirurg Songsivilai, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, Thailand.

During the meeting, Doctor Jimmy Lim Chee Ming from Universiti Brunei Darussalam also presented the report of the 11th STI Committee Advisory Board Meeting.

65th National Webinar Official Opening

Dedicated, creative and innovative teachers will provide quality education to students, moreover when the world is now hit by the COVID-19 pandemic that is bringing changes to life and aspects of education. Thus, teachers should be enthusiastic and courageous to be innovative in teaching and learning techniques and methods because critical thinking, creativity as well as the skill of mastering subject knowledge, social and emotional are the keys to the success of innovation.

The matter was stated by Awang Haji Muhammad Rosli bin Haji Ibrahim, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Religious Affairs at the Opening of the 65th National Webinar on Formal Religious Education of Brunei Darussalam, in conjunction with Teachers' Day 2021, yesterday MORNING. The National Webinar was joined by about 900 participants. The first presentation session was conducted by Doctor Haji Adanan bin Haji Basar, Ra'es of Seri Begawan Religious Teachers University College, KUPU SB. The webinar was also participated by presenters from abroad. The opening ceremony organised by the Faculty of Education, KUPU SB coincided with the Nadwah Tarbiah Islamiah Online Programme.

Commonwealth Finance Ministers’ Meeting

Efforts in strengthening fiscal sustainability is an important objective especially when global recovery is still fragile. Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Ahmaddin bin Haji Abd Rahman, Deputy Minister of Finance and Economy for Fiscal shared the matter when leading the delegation of Brunei Darussalam to the virtual Commonwealth Finance Ministers' Meeting, CFMM.

In his speech, Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Ahmaddin also shared the role of technology is important in building long term resilience. The Meeting was chaired by The Honorable Gaston Browne, Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Corporate Governance and Public-Private Partnerships, Antigua and Barbuda. The main discussions of the meeting amongst others included debt sustainability and economic recovery. Also joining the meeting was Dayang Hajah Norliah binti Haji Kula, Permanent Secretary for Policy and Fiscal at the Ministry of Finance and Economy. Bangladesh will be assuming the role of the CFMM Chair 2022.

UN Biodiversity Conference

ASEAN's biodiversity is important in providing a multitude of opportunities for livelihood and economic development, contribute to poverty alleviation, technology and innovation, serving as an effective adaption and mitigation measures against climate change impacts. It is also crucial for building resilience against new and emerging diseases as may be gleaned from the ASEAN Comprehensive Recovery Framework and the One Health approach. The matter was shared by Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ali bin Apong, Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism through the Joint Statement to the Convention on Biological Diversity COP 15 of ASEAN at the High Level Segment of the United Nations Biodiversity Conference, UN via video conference.

Yang Berhormat said the ASEAN Member States have also agreed to, among others, intensify efforts on protected areas, particularly to improve the management of ASEAN Heritage Parks, through research, technology transfer, innovation, capacity enhancement and the adoption of sustainable financing options. The conference themed "Ecological Civilization – Building a Shared Future for All Life on Earth", was hosted by the People's Republic of China. In line with the conference's theme, the objective of the High Level Segment was to build and maintain political momentum in support of the ongoing negotiations to develop a detailed and effective post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework, due for adoption at phase two of the Conference scheduled in early 2022.
