14th APEC Energy Ministerial Meeting Focuses on Sustainable Growth and Energy Transitions
LIMA — The 14th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Energy Ministerial Meeting (EMM) themed ‘Empower. Include. Grow.’ convened at the Lima Convention Centre from August 15-16, drawing international leaders to discuss sustainable energy policies and the future of energy transitions in the Asia-Pacific region.
According to Radio Television Brunei, the session was chaired by Peru’s Minister of Energy and Mines, the Honourable Rómulo Mucho Mamani, and featured notable participants including Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Lailaraja Retired Major General Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof, Brunei’s Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Second Minister of Defence, as well as His Excellency Dato Paduka Haji Serbini bin Haji Ali, Brunei’s Ambassador to the United States. The discussions primarily focused on advancing energy transitions, enhancing energy access, and developing hydrogen policies to promote sustainable growth across APEC economies.
During the Ministers’ Discussion, Brunei Darussalam highlighted its initiatives in advancing the Energy Transition agenda and reaffirmed its commitment to international collaboration in the hydrogen industry. The meeting also addressed climate change and explored strategies for achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. The networking sessions provided a platform for Brunei’s minister to engage with other heads of delegation, including Yang Amat Berbahagia Dato’ Sri Haji Fadillah Yusof, Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia and Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation.
The meeting concluded with the endorsement of two key documents: the ‘Lima Statement’ and the ‘APEC Policy Guidance to develop and implement Low-Carbon Hydrogen Policy frameworks in the Asia-Pacific.’ These documents underline the APEC economies’ dedication to fostering low-carbon economies and supporting the renewable energy sector as part of broader sustainable energy transitions. The Policy Guidance is set to serve as a living document to guide APEC working groups on enhancing cooperation for a clean and low-carbon hydrogen ecosystem in the region.
