Abra to Receive Fire Stations in 12 Municipalities as Part of BFP Modernization
ABRA, Philippines — The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) has committed to establishing a fire station in each of the 12 municipalities within Abra that are currently without one, aligning with a broader 10-year modernization plan aimed at enhancing the agency’s capabilities across the Cordillera region.
According to Philippines News Agency, this initiative, set to unfold over the next five years, is designed to bolster the region’s firefighting infrastructure significantly. The plan includes not only the construction of new fire stations but also the augmentation of existing facilities with additional personnel and fire trucks, thereby improving the overall readiness and response capacity to fire emergencies.
The move to enhance fire services in Abra is part of a national strategy to address infrastructure gaps, with 123 new fire stations planned across the Philippines. This development follows an acknowledgment of the critical need for emergency services in underserved areas, particularly in fast-growing urban and rural locales.
The BFP’s expansion efforts also encompass a broader role that includes emergency medical services, necessitating specialized training for personnel in rescue operations and medical response. This expanded mandate reflects a holistic approach to emergency and disaster management, ensuring that fire departments are equipped to handle a range of crisis situations.
The challenge of securing adequate land for these new facilities, particularly in densely populated urban areas, has been identified as a significant hurdle. BFP National Director Louie Puracan highlighted ongoing negotiations with local governments to secure necessary plots for construction, emphasizing the importance of local cooperation in facilitating the BFP’s mission.
Funding for the modernization program is secured through Republic Act 11589, the Bureau of Fire Protection Modernization Act, which establishes a trust fund supported by national budget allocations, BFP-generated revenues, and other sources. This financial framework is set to underpin the acquisition of new fire trucks and equipment, marking a substantial investment in the country’s fire prevention and response capabilities.
The BFP’s commitment to upgrading its infrastructure and services underscores a national priority to enhance public safety and resilience against fire-related incidents, promising a significant step forward for communities across Abra and beyond.
