Surigao del Sur Shaken by Magnitude 5.4 Earthquake

SURIGAO DEL SUR – A significant tremor measuring magnitude 5.4 struck the province of Surigao del Sur on Friday afternoon, causing concern among residents.

According to Philippines News Agency, the earthquake occurred 89 kilometers southeast of Cagwait at 5:28 p.m., with a depth of 16 kilometers. The agency, in its 6:30 p.m. bulletin, identified the quake as tectonic in origin.

Residents of Cagwait experienced the quake at Intensity IV, indicating a moderately strong shaking, while in Bislig, the shaking was reported as Intensity II, or slightly felt. Additionally, Phivolcs recorded instrumental intensities, which measure ground acceleration, including Intensity III (weak) in the City of Tandag, Surigao del Sur; Intensity II in Nabunturan, Davao de Oro; and Intensity I in San Francisco, Southern Leyte. These measurements offer a scientific assessment of the quake’s impact across different locations.

Phivolcs reassured the public that both aftershocks and significant damage are unlikely following this earthquake. The distinction between reported intensity, which is based on eyewitness accounts, and instrumental intensity, measured by specialized equipment, helps authorities and the public understand the quake’s effects more comprehensively.
