Sonny Angara Confirmed as Secretary of Education by Commission on Appointments
MANILA — Sonny Angara has been officially confirmed as the Secretary of the Department of Education (DepEd) by the Commission on Appointments (CA) on Wednesday, following a swift and unanimous approval process.
According to Philippines News Agency, Chairperson of the CA Committee on Education, Angara’s confirmation was largely influenced by his extensive background in legislative work related to education, his prior role as the Senate’s Finance Committee chairperson, and his commitment to advancing the interests of teachers and students alike. Tulfo highlighted Angara’s initiatives to provide easier loan access for teachers and develop a system for career progression, expressing enthusiasm for future collaborations to enhance the Department of Education.
The confirmation hearing for Angara, a seasoned politician with experience in both the Senate and the House of Representatives, was notably brief, lasting less than 10 minutes. The panel expedited the process, foregoing the customary opening statement and further inquiries into his qualifications out of respect for his extensive governmental service.
Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero remarked that the expedited deliberation was a standard practice for former legislative members appointed to executive positions, emphasizing that this tradition reflects the respect and familiarity existing members have with Angara’s policy positions and advocacy efforts.
In addition to Angara’s appointment, the CA also approved the ad interim appointments of 15 foreign service officials from the Department of Foreign Affairs on the same day, underscoring a day of significant confirmations within key governmental roles.
