MANILA, Philippines — Senator Robin Padilla has officially taken over as president of the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino (PDP), stepping into the role previously held by Palawan 2nd District Rep. Jose Chavez Alvarez. The transition occurred on Wednesday, marking a new chapter for the political party as it gears up for the 2025 mid-term elections.
According to Philippines News Agency, Alvarez expressed confidence in Padilla's leadership, noting his previous roles within the party as executive vice president and acting president. "Senator Padilla is well-prepared to consolidate our party membership and lead our strategies moving into the upcoming elections," said Alvarez. Padilla's swearing-in was conducted by PDP Vice Chairman Alfonso Cusi and Auditor Senator Christopher "Bong" Go.
Earlier in April, under the guidance of the party's chairman, former President Rodrigo Duterte, the PDP endorsed the re-election bids of Senators Ronald 'Bato' Dela Rosa, Francis Tolentino, and Go. This endorsement is part of a broader strategy to maintain the party's influence and agenda in Philippine politics.
The PDP praised Alvarez for his leadership over the past 20 months, during which he strengthened the party's commitment to national reform and development. "Under Alvarez's leadership, PDP became a robust platform committed to fostering reforms that ensure every Filipino has the opportunity to reach their fullest potential," the statement read.
In his legislative duties, Padilla has been an advocate for constitutional reforms, peace, order, and anti-illegal drug measures, and has emphasized the rights and sovereignty of Muslim Filipinos.
The party also noted ongoing internal disputes, referencing the February 2023 appeal to the Supreme Court by the Pimentel-led faction, challenging the Comelec's recognition of the Cusi-wing as the legitimate faction of PDP-Laban. Despite these challenges, PDP remains a pivotal player in the Philippine political landscape, even as its membership in the House of Representatives has significantly decreased since Duterte's tenure.
