China to Host Joint Military Exercises with Five ASEAN Countries

Beijing, China – China has announced plans to conduct joint military exercises, named “Aman Youyi 2023,” with five member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The exercises, focusing on counterterrorism and maritime security, are scheduled for mid-to-late November off the coast of Zhanjiang in South China’s Guangdong province.

According to Philippines News Agency, the participating ASEAN countries include Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos. The exercise is aimed at enhancing counter-terrorism and anti-piracy capabilities in both urban and maritime settings, contributing to regional peace and stability. “Aman Youyi 2023” was initiated by China and Malaysia, with the first exercise, a tabletop combat scenario, taking place in Kuala Lumpur in 2014. Malaysia hosted subsequent field exercises in 2015 and 2016. This year marks the 5th edition of the exercises, with China as the host and the first-time participation of Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos.
