Red Tide Alert Continues in Surigao del Sur and Norte Coastal Waters

SURIGAO CITY – The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) has reiterated warnings about the ongoing red tide toxin presence in coastal waters off Surigao del Sur and Surigao del Norte, particularly affecting Lianga Bay and San Benito in Siargao Island.

According to Philippines News Agency, shellfish collected from these areas have tested positive for Paralytic Shellfish Poison (PSP), exceeding the regulatory safety limit. Consequently, all shellfish and Acetes sp., commonly known as alamang, from Lianga Bay and San Benito are deemed unsafe for human consumption. However, BFAR clarified that fish, squids, shrimps, and crabs could be consumed provided they are fresh, thoroughly washed, and their internal organs, such as gills and intestines, are removed before cooking.

Following the BFAR announcement, the provincial government has communicated the health risk to local government units along Lianga Bay, urging public adherence to the safety advisory to prevent health hazards associated with toxic red tide consumption.
