DepEd Ensures Assistance to Teachers Involved in Accidents During Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections
Manila – Undersecretary Michael Poa, the spokesperson for the Department of Education (DepEd), announced that the agency is committed to providing aid to teachers involved in accidents during the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE).
According to Philippines News Agency, Manila on Monday, Poa disclosed that five accidents involving teachers who were serving as electoral board members were reported on polling day.
Poa further elaborated on specific incidents, such as the death of a female teacher in Legazpi, Albay, who was involved in a motorcycle accident while heading to the voting precinct. In another incident, a male teacher in Pangasinan was bitten by a snake while delivering election materials. “The teacher now is under observation for 24 hours as advised by the doctors. But as to the expenses, it’s covered by the medical reimbursements of Comelec,” Poa stated. Additionally, a teacher in Davao City sustained a bone fracture in a vehicular accident.
Poa assured that, depending on the nature of the incident, different avenues of assistance are available for affected teachers. “First, if this is election-related, the Comelec is there. If it’s not election-related, or if it’s election-related but would still require additional assistance, we have GSIS (Government Service Insurance System) personal accident insurance that we bought for our teachers,” he added.
