QUEZON CITY - In response to the ongoing challenges posed by Typhoon Carina and the enhanced southwest monsoon, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has instructed government agencies to intensify relief efforts in isolated areas severely affected by the weather conditions.
According to Philippines News Agency, during a situation briefing held at Camp Aguinaldo on Wednesday, he expressed satisfaction with the current governmental response but emphasized the need to maintain and increase efforts. He specifically directed the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and the Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) to coordinate closely. "You [DSWD] work with the OCD so that you can focus your attention on those areas that we will have to service that are presently isolated," Marcos stated, underscoring the urgency of reaching communities that have been cut off by the storm.
President Marcos also highlighted the critical condition of those in isolated areas, noting their dire need for immediate assistance. "Importante 'yun kasi 'yang mga 'yan hindi na kumain ng ilang araw. So as soon as possible, dapat naka-ready na 'yung ipapasok natin because we know that they are the priority - critical ang situation na 'yan (It is very important because they have not eaten for days. So as soon as possible, our supplies should be ready when we come in because they are our priority. These are critical situations)," he added.
In addition to DSWD and OCD's coordinated efforts, the Philippine Army's 525th Engineer "Forerunner" Battalion has deployed two Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) teams consisting of 52 personnel, along with essential rescue assets including military trucks and rubber boats. These teams, managed by the military's Joint Task Force National Capital Region, are part of a broader response aimed at addressing the massive flooding in Metro Manila and surrounding areas.
The Philippine National Police (PNP) has also been actively involved, with Chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil emphasizing the PNP's commitment to enhancing humanitarian assistance, evacuation procedures, and overall emergency response. "Our personnel are actively deployed across Metro Manila and other impacted areas, working diligently to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents," Marbil stated.
The PNP has deployed a total of 5,820 personnel as part of their Search and Rescue Teams. These teams are crucial in ensuring public safety during ongoing moderate to heavy rains that have led to significant disruptions across the region.
In Central Luzon, emergency response measures are also in full swing, with 528 families currently sheltered in 34 evacuation centers. This coordinated effort encompasses multiple levels of government, including local police forces and district-specific commands, ensuring comprehensive coverage and support for affected residents.
As the situation develops, the Marcos administration remains focused on prioritizing the safety and well-being of those in critical areas, emphasizing swift and effective action to mitigate the impacts of Typhoon Carina.
