Post: Pimentel Advocates for Work Break Policy Amid Rising Heat Levels

MANILA - In response to escalating temperatures nationwide, Senate Minority Leader Aquilino "Koko" Pimentel III has proposed the establishment of mandatory work breaks during periods of extreme heat, aligning with practices in countries like the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This initiative aims to protect workers from the adverse effects of heat exposure by adopting international standards for occupational heat safety.

According to Philippines News Agency, Pimentel has urged the Department of Labor and Employment to collaborate with the private sector to implement policies similar to those in the UAE, where work is moderated during high-temperature conditions. The senator's appeal is grounded in recent data from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), which indicates a significant risk associated with the current heatwave.

PAGASA has reported 'danger' level heat indices, which have soared between 42 to 51°C in Metro Manila and other areas, prompting a call for immediate action to introduce preventive measures against heat-induced health threats. Notably, the heat index at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Pasay City reached critical levels, exceeding 42 degrees Celsius on several consecutive days.

In response to these concerning statistics, Pimentel has recommended a reduction in the heat index threshold to 40 degrees Celsius for initiating work breaks, a standard that mirrors UAE's approach. The senator expressed particular concern for outdoor workers, such as those in construction, who are directly exposed to the sun's intensity and are at greater risk during such extreme weather conditions.
