Piddig Hospital Enhances Healthcare with Newborn Screening Capability
Piddig, Ilocos Norte – Infants in the rural regions of Ilocos Norte will soon have access to advanced newborn screening tests closer to home with the introduction of new equipment at the upgraded Piddig District Hospital.
According to Philippines News Agency, chair of the health committee of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, the Provincial Council on Monday approved a resolution allowing Governor Matthew Joseph Manotoc to receive a newborn hearing screening machine from the Department of Health-Center for Health Development in Region 1. The DOH’s regional director, Dr. Paula Paz M. Sydiongco, represents the initiative, which is part of the Universal Newborn Hearing Screening Program. This program is designed to facilitate the prevention, early detection, and treatment of hearing loss in infants.
The Piddig District Hospital is not the only recipient of such vital healthcare equipment; other district hospitals in the area, including those in the towns of Narvacan, Cervantes, and Salcedo in Ilocos Sur, have been similarly equipped. Gaoat highlighted the significance of the hearing screening machines, noting that early detection of hearing issues can be life-changing. The DOH has emphasized that hearing is crucial for a child’s speech development and mental growth.
