Phivolcs Observes Increased Seismicity in Bulusan Volcano, No Alert Level Raise Expected Yet
SORSOGON PROVINCE — An uptick in seismic activity around Bulusan Volcano has been observed, but officials from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) suggest that a raise in the volcano’s alert level is unlikely for the moment.
According to a new release by the Philippines News Agency, the volcano has been on Alert Level 0 since January, and raising the alert would require more than just an increase in the number of earthquakes. An advisory issued on Sunday noted that 87 volcanic earthquakes had been recorded since 5 a.m. of October 14. Of these, 29 were volcano-tectonic and occurred 1 to 8 kilometers beneath the southern and western sectors of the volcano. Bacolcol urged the public to maintain distance from a 4-kilometer area surrounding the volcano, citing risks such as sudden eruptions, falling rocks, and landslides.
