MANILA — The Philippines has officially commenced the implementation of the ATA Carnet System, a significant step to enhance trade efficiency by joining over 80 countries that already utilize this global customs document, known as the "passport of goods."
According to Philippines News Agency, who spoke at the system's launch event in Manila Hotel, the ATA Carnet simplifies the temporary admission of goods across international borders, allowing Filipino exporters to bypass the often complex and burdensome customs requirements of different countries. This document enables duty-free and value-added tax-free entry of products into participating nations, streamlining the process for goods intended for exhibitions and promotional events.
Secretary Pascual highlighted that the adoption of the ATA Carnet would significantly lower trade costs and expedite the movement of goods, providing a competitive edge to local exporters, especially in participating in international trade shows and exhibitions. He emphasized the cost savings and logistical benefits that come with using a single comprehensive document for customs clearance.
In support of this initiative, the government plans to roll out capacity-building and advocacy efforts nationwide. These initiatives aim to educate and encourage Philippine enterprises to leverage the ATA Carnet to realize its full benefits, fostering broader participation in the global market.
Enunina Mangio, president of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI), echoed the sentiment, noting that streamlined cross-border transactions will not only benefit exporters but also contribute positively to the broader Philippine economy. She called on local exporters to seize this new opportunity to facilitate easier and more cost-effective international trade.
