Philippine Navy Seizes PHP64 Million in Undocumented Tobacco in Tawi-Tawi
ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines – The Philippine Navy’s BRP Jose Loor Sr. (PC-390) intercepted a motor launch carrying undocumented tobacco products worth PHP64 million in Tawi-Tawi province on March 9, during a routine maritime security operation. This significant seizure underscores the Navy’s ongoing efforts to safeguard Philippine waters and enforce maritime laws.
According to Philippines News Agency, a statement from Naval Forces Western Mindanao (NFWM) acting public affairs office chief, Lt. Chester Ross Cabaltera, the patrol gunboat encountered the M/L Yasmen near Manuk Mangkaw Island, Simunul town, while conducting operations aimed at enhancing maritime security, law enforcement, and national defense. Navy personnel boarded the vessel for inspection, discovering the large cache of undocumented tobacco goods aboard.
The contraband, with an estimated market value of PHP64 million, was subsequently turned over to the Bureau of Customs Sub-Port Bongao Station for appropriate disposition and further investigation. Rear Admiral Anthony Miraflor, commander of NFWM, highlighted the operation as a testament to the Philippine Navy’s unwavering commitment to protecting the nation’s waters and ensuring the legality of maritime commerce.
“We remain resolute in our mission to uphold maritime security and promote lawful commerce within Philippine waters. The PN stands ready to confront and deter any threat to national sovereignty and maritime safety,” Miraflor stated, emphasizing the importance of the Navy’s role in national security and law enforcement on the seas.
