TAGUIG — A group of Philippine legislators has proposed an ad hoc committee to explore the possibility of relocating the House of Representatives near the Senate's future office in Bonifacio Global City (BGC).
According to Philippines News Agency, Quezon Rep. David Suarez, and Camarines Sur Rep. Luis Raymund Villafuerte Jr., the objective of the potential move is to enhance legislative coordination between the two houses. The senators are slated to partially operate from their new building in BGC starting July 2024.
The resolution recalls the historical arrangement where the Senate and House shared a common space, which led to the terms "upper house" and "lower house". With the new Senate building nearing completion, the proposed study aims to ensure the House's relocation will consider accessibility to public transport, proximity to other key government institutions, and the presence of major corporate and technological entities.
The lawmakers emphasized that the relocation should not only meet practical and logistic needs but also embody an iconic and distinctly Filipino architectural design, respecting green spaces and promoting sustainability. The feasibility of funding for the project is also a key consideration outlined in the resolution.
