BOC Hails Arrest of Major Onion Smuggler as Key Step in Anti-Smuggling Campaign

MANILA – The Bureau of Customs (BOC) has marked a significant victory in its campaign against agricultural smuggling with the arrest of a big-time onion smuggler. BOC Commissioner Bien Rubio commended the operation, signifying the administration’s commitment to combatting illegal agricultural imports.

According to Philippines News Agency, Jayson de Roxas Taculog was arrested on Wednesday for smuggling 30 containers of onions, as reported by Senator Cynthia Villar during the Senate plenary deliberations on the Department of Agriculture’s (DA) 2024 budget proposal. The BOC views this arrest as a critical move against threats to the economy, livelihoods of small farmers, and the integrity of legitimate businesses. BOC Deputy Commissioner Juvymax Uy attributed the success to coordination among government agencies and the proactive efforts of the bureau. He emphasized the importance of such actions in protecting consumer health and safety. Villar confirmed that Taculog was arrested under an arrest warrant issued by a court in Manila, facing charges of large-scale agricultural smuggling and economic sabotage. The DA and the Philippine Competition Commission are investigating the case.
