Negros Oriental Art Gallery Champions Local Talent During National Arts Month

DUMAGUETE CITY, Negros Oriental – In celebration of National Arts Month, a local art gallery in Dumaguete City, the capital of Negros Oriental province, is making significant strides to support homegrown artists by providing them with a platform to showcase their work. Arté Café/Gallery/Workshop, under the leadership of Sabrina Skye Diago Benito, is dedicated to elevating the presence of local artists in the competitive national art scene.

According to Philippines News Agency, the 30-year-old owner and manager of Arté Café/Gallery/Workshop, the gallery has served as an exhibition venue for over a year, catering to more than 50 artists. Benito, an accomplished artist from Bais City, Negros Oriental, highlighted that while many of these artists are local, others come from outside the province. She noted that not all featured artists had previously had opportunities to promote their work or gain recognition within the local art community. However, some have successfully “spread their wings” after being featured at Arté Gallery.

Benito expressed her hope that both art enthusiasts and the general public would support local artists by visiting Arté Gallery. She emphasized the importance of appreciating the art on display, promoting the local art scene, and possibly purchasing artworks. The gallery’s youngest exhibitor to date is a 17-year-old senior high school student, showcasing the inclusivity and diversity of talent Arté Gallery supports.

Despite the inherent business risks associated with running an art gallery, Benito remains committed to her vision of fostering a vibrant local art community. Arté Gallery, described by Benito as fun, cozy, friendly, and homey, not only exhibits artworks but also serves as a venue for workshops and sells locally made crafts and souvenirs. The gallery curates items for display through a careful selection process and hosts at least two shows a month, featuring artists based on availability and curator approval.

Benito, who also manages the family-owned Dekada Negros restaurant and handles social media for the business, shared the challenges of juggling responsibilities. The gallery and restaurant are located in the same building along Rizal Boulevard, with the gallery occupying the second floor.

Despite the gallery not generating significant revenue compared to other visual arts outlets in the province, Benito stressed that her passion for art and supporting local artists takes precedence over financial gain. As part of National Arts Month celebrations, Arté Fair 2024, running from February 10 to March 17, showcases the work of several artists, including Cil Flores, who credited Benito and Arté Gallery for promoting her work.

Benito’s aspiration is for the local community to regularly support the gallery, thereby enhancing the visibility of local artists and attracting more collectors to the Dumaguete art scene. She hopes to offer regular art classes in the future, further contributing to the development of local talent.
