Post: Pangasinan SMEs Showcase Export-Quality Products at International Food Expo in Pasay

Pasay City, Philippines — Ten small and medium enterprises (SMEs) from Pangasinan are currently showcasing their export-quality products at the International Food Exhibition (IFEX) Philippines. This marks the first time the province has participated as a group in this major event, held at the World Trade Center in Pasay City. The expo, which runs through Sunday, features a diverse array of Pangasinan’s specialty foods, including deboned and processed milkfish, sugarcane vinegar, and fermented fish paste.

According to Philippines News Agency, the participation of these SMEs in IFEX is strategic, aimed at expanding their market reach, particularly in the international arena. The products presented at the expo were selected to highlight the unique culinary offerings of Pangasinan, ranging from naturally fermented sugarcane vinegar by Dimalupig and Gabrielle Food Products Manufacturing to carabao dairy products and processed catfish.

Founder Glaiza Velasco of Gabrielle Food Products described their meticulous process of fermenting locally-sourced sugarcane for two to three months to achieve the desired acidity. Velasco emphasized the dual benefit of her enterprise, which not only supported her education but also provided livelihood for farmers in her community.

Another first-time participant, Mama Cili Enterprises from Anda town, has been successfully supplying bottled processed milkfish to various clients, including an airline. "Our products are being served in business class and first-class cabins," owner Cecilia Natividad shared, highlighting the high standards of their product offerings.

Daniel Bernal Sr., who established Bernal Bagoong in Lingayen town over six decades ago, has seen his family business grow to support not just his family but also the local fishing community. His granddaughter, Genieleen Bernal, expressed pride in their manufacturing practices that ensure product quality. "We are very thankful to the provincial government of Pangasinan for the exposure of the products and the opportunity to meet potential investors," she added.

Rolly Mateo Sr., chair of the Bantog Samahang Nayon Multi-Purpose Cooperative, voiced his excitement over the international exposure that could potentially expand their market. Similarly, Evelyn Co, owner of Houyang Food Corporation, noted that participation in IFEX since 2023 has significantly boosted the marketability of their products.

The Department of Trade and Industry-Pangasinan Director Natalia Dalaten confirmed that all participating products meet necessary certifications and standards for export, having passed rigorous evaluations by relevant government agencies. Dalaten highlighted that the event is not only a showcase but also a platform for potential business-to-business meetings, enhancing the prospects for these SMEs to break into international markets.

IFEX, now the country's largest international trade exhibition on ethnic and specialty food, has evolved from its beginnings as the Asian Ethnic Food Festival. This year’s expo hosts over 500 exhibitors and anticipates more than 10,000 buyers and visitors. In addition to the physical exhibition, the products are also available for international orders through IFEXConnect.com.
