Post: Lawmaker Urges China to Respect Philippines’ Sovereignty Over West Philippine Sea

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — Representative Rufus Rodriguez of Cagayan de Oro City's 2nd District called on China to respect President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s firm stance on the West Philippine Sea (WPS), declared during his third State of the Nation Address (SONA). Rodriguez emphasized the Philippines' unwavering commitment to asserting its rights over its exclusive economic zone (EEZ), which includes the WPS.

According to Philippines News Agency, the assertion by President Marcos that the WPS "is ours and will remain ours" should be respected internationally, underscoring that the area lies within the Philippines' 200-nautical mile EEZ as recognized under international law. Rodriguez, who has been vocal against Beijing's activities within these waters, pointed out the geographical and legal discrepancies in China’s claims, particularly mentioning the Ayungin Shoal and Scarborough Shoal, both significantly distant from China yet claimed by it.

Rodriguez further argued for the importance of international respect and dialogue, highlighting the distances of these territories from China and their proximity to the Philippine mainland. He called on Beijing to heed the Philippine president's words to foster peace, stability, and harmony in the region.

Meanwhile, the National Security Council (NSC), through National Security Adviser Eduardo Año, reiterated its full support for President Marcos' declarations. Año expressed confidence in the Philippines' position and dismissed any potential impact of Chinese aggression or coercion on it. He emphasized ongoing national efforts to exercise maritime entitlements and rights, despite facing protests and intimidation.

The NSC is also actively seeking international support to uphold the arbitral ruling on the South China Sea and underscore the crucial role of international law in maintaining regional peace and stability. Año stressed the commitment to diplomatic dialogue and building partnerships based on mutual respect and sincerity, aiming to unite global partners and allies in support of the Philippines' legal claims.
