Lawmaker Calls for Enhanced Measures Against African Swine Fever Impact

Manila-Agri Party-list Representative Wilbert Lee urged government agencies on Thursday to establish more robust plans to support hog raisers and prevent potential spikes in pork prices amid ongoing African swine fever (ASF) outbreaks. Lee’s call to action includes a comprehensive strategy to provide aid, accessible vaccines, and thorough monitoring in affected areas.

According to Philippines News agency, as of August 8, ASF has been detected in 22 provinces across 11 regions, with significant case numbers in provinces such as North Cotabato and Occidental Mindoro. In response, Lee has filed House Resolution No. 1956 to initiate a probe into ASF’s escalating effects nationally. He emphasized the importance of sustained support from agencies like the Department of Agriculture (DA) and the Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC) to secure the livelihoods of hog raisers and ensure the stability of food supplies. Lee also highlighted the need for emergency planning in anticipation of the La NiƱa phenomenon to prevent shortages and price hikes during the upcoming holiday season.
