La Salle Dominates UST in UAAP Men’s Basketball; FEU Women’s Team Ends Four-Game Losing Streak

Manila – In a day marked by crucial wins, De La Salle University’s men’s basketball team routed University Santo Tomas 100-69, while the Far Eastern University (FEU) women’s team broke a four-game losing streak with a 64-47 win over the University of the East. The games are part of the ongoing University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 86.

According to a news release by the Philippines News Agency, Kevin Quiambao led the Green Archers with a standout performance, scoring 22 points, 12 rebounds, six assists, five steals and one block. This was La Salle’s fifth win in eight games, improving their record to 5-3 and securing third place in the standings. On the other hand, UST remains at the bottom with a 1-7 record.

Jonnel Policarpio added to La Salle’s score with 14 points, 11 rebounds, five assists, one steal, and one block. Other contributors included Raven Cortez and Evan Nelle with 13 and 11 points respectively. “We have learned a lot from our mistakes in the first round. Coming to the second round, we have to adjust and stick more to the system,” said Quiambao, who was named last season’s Rookie of the Year.

In another game, National University edged out the University of the East 64-61, thereby taking a solo lead with a 7-1 record. La Salle is set to face National University again on Saturday at 4 p.m., aiming to repeat their first-round overtime win of 80-77.

For UST, Nic Cabañero led the team with 13 points, six assists, and five rebounds. He was followed by Christian Manaytay with 10 points and four rebounds, and SJ Moore with nine points and five rebounds. UST is scheduled to play against the University of the East at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

In the women’s game, FEU’s shooting guard Queenie Aquino scored 23 points, including 16 in the first half. The Lady Tamaraws improved their record to 3-5. Josee Kaputu, the Congolese center, added 15 points, 16 rebounds, three steals, and two assists. Julie Manguiat also contributed with five points, four assists, and two rebounds.

FEU led 39-26 at halftime and maintained the lead throughout, even when the University of the East attempted a comeback, closing the gap to 30-41 in the third period. Despite averaging 29.0 turnovers in the first round, FEU managed to pull through with the win. The University of the East, despite more rebounds, remained winless after eight games.
