LGUs Rally to Support Philippine Sovereignty in the West Philippine Sea
QUEZON CITY – Thirty-four local government units have united to affirm their support for the Philippines’ sovereignty in the West Philippine Sea, amid ongoing tensions with China. This declaration was made by Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Benjamin Abalos Jr. during the Saturday News Forum.
According to Philippines News Agency, these LGUs have submitted manifestations of support, committing to protect the nation’s interests in the region. “They came together to express support in safeguarding the Philippine Sea and we are identifying what they need — water, electricity, etcetera,” he stated. The support from the LGUs follows the DILG’s inaugural National Summit for the West Philippine Sea held last year, which aimed to foster a unified vision and action plan for ensuring a secure, sustainable, and prosperous future for the area, particularly for coastal communities.
Additionally, in a speech during the 503rd commemoration of the Victory of Mactan at Liberty Shrine in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. praised the patriotism demonstrated by Filipinos in their collective efforts to assert sovereign rights in line with international law. President Marcos emphasized the visible patriotism in acts of kindness, support to the needy, and defense of the oppressed. “This is also demonstrated by bravely asserting our rights and defending what is ours under the law, in accordance with the international order and in the eyes of God,” he added.
The Philippines’ resolute stance in the West Philippine Sea has been a significant factor in President Marcos being named one of the world’s 100 most influential people by Time Magazine.
