IPU Assembly Highlights Role of Parliaments in Humanitarian Efforts
Geneva: The 151st Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and related meetings focused on strengthening humanitarian efforts and the significant role of parliaments in aiding communities affected by conflicts, disasters, and global crises. Held in Geneva, Switzerland, from 20th to 23rd October, the assembly’s theme was ‘Upholding Humanitarian Norms and Supporting Humanitarian Action in Times of Crisis.’
According to Radio Television Brunei, the Legislative Council’s delegation was led by Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Lela Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdul Rahman bin Dato Setia Haji Mohamed Taib, Speaker of the Legislative Council. He was accompanied by Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman and Yang Berhormat Awang Zainol bin Haji Mohamed, Members of the Legislative Council. th a focus on accountability to war victims, particularly in Palestine. The IPU Standing Committees addressed global issues concerning peace, human rights, sustainable development, and international relations.
The Standing Committee on Sustainable Development tackled the role of parliaments in trade protection, tariff issues, corporate tax evasion prevention, and climate change impact. The Standing Committee on United Nations Affairs explored the role of parliaments in strengthening the multilateral system and enhancing cooperation to tackle global challenges. The Forum on Young Parliamentarians convened to promote youth participation and leadership in parliaments, while the Governing Council reviewed IPU’s activities and progress on the IPU Strategy 2022-2026. Key decisions included the approval of the 2026 budget, an action plan to boost women’s participation in parliaments, amendments to the IPU Statutes and Rules, and the consideration of membership, including that of the Legislative Council of Brunei Da
russalam. The assembly concluded with the presentation of the Standing Committees’ reports, the adoption of outcomes from the general debate, and the approval of resolutions and amendments to the IPU Statutes.
