House Resolution Seeks Support for Fisherfolk Affected by MT Terranova Oil Spill
MANILA — In response to the environmental and economic impact of the recent oil spill from the sunken MT Terranova, Agri Party-list Representative Wilbert Lee has filed a resolution in the House to investigate the incident and provide support to affected communities. The spill threatens the livelihoods of approximately 19,000 fisherfolk in Bataan and Bulacan.
According to Philippines News Agency, the sunken vessel, carrying 1.4 million liters of industrial fuel oil, poses a significant threat to marine life and the fishing industry in the region. The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) has estimated substantial monthly income losses for fisherfolk—PHP83.8 million in Bataan and PHP63 million in Bulacan. Rep. Lee is calling for urgent governmental action to mitigate the disaster’s impact, including identifying affected communities for immediate assistance and establishing alternative livelihood options before enforcing a fishing ban in the affected areas. He also emphasized the need for the Philippines to improve its capacity to manage oil spills, advocating for better equipment and independent capabilities.
