North Korea Faces Threat of Reduced Crop Output Due to Severe Weather Conditions
Pyongyang-North Korea’s agricultural output is at risk of significant reduction this year due to severe flooding and potential pest infestations following recent heavy rains, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The country is bracing for above-average rainfall through October, which could lead to extensive agricultural damage and displacement of populations.
According to Philippines News agency,The FAO’s Global Information and Early Warning System report highlighted concerns about waterlogging and the exacerbation of existing floods that could lead to crop damages, particularly in the major agricultural provinces of Hwanghae and Phyongan. Additionally, higher temperatures forecasted for the same period might increase the likelihood of pest and disease outbreaks, further threatening crop yields. Despite an on-year increase in crop production last year, North Korea still falls short of the annual amount needed to sustain its population, intensifying the impact of these environmental challenges on food security.
