MANILA — In a pioneering environmental initiative, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has authorized the integration of shredded plastic bags into asphalt cement mix, aiming to improve the longevity of the nation's roads. This innovative measure, encapsulated in Department Order No. 139 signed by Secretary Manuel Bonoan on August 2, allows regional and district engineering offices to utilize recycled plastic waste in constructing more durable road surfaces.
According to Philippines News Agency, the new policy promotes the recycling of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) plastic bags by converting them into an additive for hot mix asphalt. "This initiative not only aims to reduce the susceptibility to permanent deformation of bituminous concrete surface course or asphalt concrete but also aligns with the Department’s commitment to sustainable engineering practices," the release stated.
The integration of recycled plastics in road construction has been validated through rigorous testing and has met all standards set by the Bureau of Research and Standards, ensuring the structural integrity and safety of the modified asphalt. This policy reflects the DPWH’s ongoing efforts to enhance construction technologies and support environmental sustainability through innovative adaptations of successful research studies.
